AMREF ENVOY TO SPOTLIGHT CRITICAL INTERSECTION BETWEEN HEALTH AND CLIMATE AT COP-28
The Amref special envoy will be central in setting the tone for the historic COP28 Health Day. The envoy will urge leaders to prioritize investment in adaptation and resilience solutions as a core component of the COP28 agenda. This is crucial to advancing equitable solutions, especially in countries with the lowest carbon emissions but the most severe climate-related health outcomes. We hope that leaders will recognize the importance of this effort and take bold action to address these pressing issues.

Amref Health Africa is deeply concerned about the recent incident in the Kenyan parliament where a female senator was asked to leave the chamber because of a blood stain on her trousers. This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the need to address period poverty and the stigma surrounding menstruation, which affects millions of girls and women globally. The statistics on this issue are alarming, and more needs to be done to ensure that every girl and woman in Kenya can manage their menstrual cycle with dignity.

STATEMENT ON THE STATUS OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM) IN KENYA ON THE COMMEMORATION OF THE ZERO TOLERANCE DAY TO FGM ON 6TH FEBRUARY 2023
As the world commemorates the zero-tolerance day of female genital mutilation (FGM) on 6th February 2023, this practice persists affecting women and girls’ health, rights and potential for self-actualization. The practice of FGM comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is recognized internationally as a violation of human rights, the health and the integrity of girls and women. It impedes the enjoyment of rights of women and girls including sexual and reproductive health rights and exposes women to serious health, psychological, physical, and social consequences. Efforts to have no FGM cases should be sustained and scaled up for the protection of girls and women to facilitate sustainable development.

Africa’s attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) largely depends on the availability of a skilled, equipped and adequately supported health workforce. The COVID-19 pandemic, as well as disease outbreaks such as Ebola, have delayed UHC progress and left a strain on the health system. Africa’s socio-economic success post pandemic is anchored in the recovery of its health system, which relies on the health workforce.
