18th March, 2009

AMREF founder Tom Rees at the AMREF Book LaunchOn March 3, 2009, AMREF launched 6 new and revised publications at a colourful event at the AMREF International Training Centre. The event was graced by a number of invited guests notable amongst them AMREF’s founding father, Dr Thomas Rees and AMREF’s Chair, Dr Pascoal Mocumbi.

With over 50 years of experience working with African communities, AMREF continues to publish health learning and training materials that are affordable, simple in presentation and language, which take into account the limited facilities and opportunities for consultancy available in health service centres in the developing world.

AMREF’s Health Learning Materials (HLM) unit contributes to health development, improved service provision in general and to training of health workers in particular, through a broad range of up-to-date learning and teaching materials, periodicals and manuals. These are targeted at clinical officers, medical assistants, nurses and midwives, laboratory technicians, public health officers and other frontline health workers in developing countries.

Dr Timothy King’ondu, Director of the Kenya Medical Training College, and co author of the book Communicable Diseases 4th Edition was the Chief Guest.

The unveiling of new AMREF publicationsOther publications launched on the day were: Clinicians Guide to Quality Outpatient Diagnosis, Training Health Care Professionals, Guidelines on Specimen Collection, Storage and Transportation, Community Health 3rd Edition and AMREF Case Studies.

In the coming months, AMREF will be working on revising its key laboratory manuals, gynaecology and obstetrics titles and nursing procedure manual. Plans are also underway to work on new titles in areas of leadership and strategic management in health institutions, research and project monitoring and evaluation. Knowledge is important not only for effective health care, but also to support the generation of new information and solutions.

These and other AMREF publications are available at leading booksellers in the region or can be ordered directly from the AMREF Bookshop. They can also be purchased online at the AMREF Bookshop.
