It was all dance, pomp and colour as the local community, Ministry of Health officials, implementing partners and other stakeholders came together to mark the launch of the Linda Afya ya Mama na Mtoto project at the Bukaya Health Centre in Mumias, Kakamega County on Tuesday June 4, 2013.
Mr Reuben Nyagweso, the Majority Leader of Kakamega County Assembly who read the key note address on behalf of the Kakamega County Governor H.E Wycliffe A. Oparanya, said the project could not have come at a better time citing deplorable maternal, newborn, child health, and nutrition indicators in the county.
In his delivered speech, the governor pledged to introduce among other things an incentive package towards facility deliveries in the County.
During the entertainment segment, group after group regaled the guests with hilarious skits laced with MNCH educational messages.
As Mr Reuben Nyangweso cut the ribbon to mark the climax of the ceremony, women ululated while community members led by CHWs waved banana leaves to welcome the project.
The four year project funded by the Micronutrient Initiative (MI) and implemented by a consortium of partners will directly benefit 29,000 pregnant women and 29,000 newborns
AMREF was represented at the event by the Deputy Country Director, Dr Meshack Ndirangu and Mr Peter Ofware, Programme Manager CRH as well and other staff members.
