Changing attitudes in Ethiopia`s pastoralist communities

In Ethiopia, the lifetime risk of a woman dying from pregnancy and childbirth related complications is extremely high.

With funding from the UK Department for International Development, The Pharo Foundation and The Allan & Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust, Amref Health Africa UK has been implementing a project to improve Maternal, Newborn and Child Health in South Omo and Segen since 2013.

`The smile of a child is the happiness of a mother`

There is a saying in Uganda, ‘Sanyu Ly’omuzadde Kwekuseka Kwomwana’ (the smile of a child is the happiness of the mother). This is the name of our Maternal Newborn and Child Health project in two rural districts of central Uganda - Kyankwanzi and Nakaseke.

Fighting malaria at community level

Tandahimba in Mtwara is one of the poorest and most remote areas of Tanzania. Before 2015, the death rate for mothers and children was incredibly high because the community had limited access to malaria treatment and maternal health services.

We are working to change this.

LEAP, the mHealth platform

In 2013, Amref Health Africa and partners developed a sustainable and scalable mobile learning academy for health workers across Africa. LEAP is an innovative solution to health worker training. To date, over 3,000 CHW's have been supported using the platform.

Clinical outreach

Dr Asrat Mengiste, Regional Manager for Amref Health Africa’s Clinical Outreach Programme, has worked for Amref Health Africa for over 10 years, dedicating his life to transforming access to surgical care across East Africa.

By training medical officers at the same time as performing surgeries, the Ethiopian surgeon has helped to transform the face of surgical care across East Africa.

Improving access to effective and efficient sexual health services

Young people, and especially young women, are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of poor services and support in making positive personal choices. Amref Health Africa is working to change this, breaking the cycle of poor attainment and extreme poverty.
