At Amref Health Africa, health security goes beyond response. It is about preparedness, trust, and equity — ensuring every community across Africa is protected from emerging and future emergencies.
The latest Ebola outbreak is a reminder that infectious disease threats remain a persistent challenge across Africa. From Ebola and Marburg to cholera, Rift Valley Fever, Mpox, and COVID-19, outbreaks continue to test the resilience of communities, health systems, and economies. Climate shocks, including floods and droughts, are further increasing health risks and stretching already limited resources.
While many countries have made progress in pandemic preparedness, critical gaps remain, including limited emergency response training, weak supply chains, and challenges in coordination and accountability.
For more than 69 years, Amref has worked alongside African governments, communities, and regional institutions to strengthen systems that prevent, detect, and respond to public health threats while ensuring continuity of essential health services during crises.
Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and neighbouring countries such as South Sudan, Kenya, and Tanzania are currently responding to an Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain.
Ebola is a severe viral disease transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated materials.
Common symptoms include:
Symptoms can appear 2–21 days after exposure.
Early detection and treatment significantly improve survival outcomes.
Amref’s approach is rooted in Africa-led, community-driven solutions that strengthen local systems and enable countries to respond independently to health threats.
Amref’s health security work is built on decades of experience supporting governments and communities to respond to infectious disease outbreaks and public health emergencies across Africa. This includes Ebola response efforts in Uganda and Guinea, as well as preparedness and cross-border interventions in neighbouring and high-risk countries, including DRC, South Sudan, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Amref has also played a critical role in responding to and strengthening preparedness for COVID-19 across Africa, cholera outbreaks, Marburg preparedness in Tanzania, Rift Valley Fever in Kenya, Mpox, and other emerging health threats.
Your support strengthens communities, equips health workers, and helps Africa prepare for and respond to health emergencies.
