{"id":228,"date":"2018-06-19T11:30:18","date_gmt":"2018-06-19T11:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amref.org\/enterprises\/2018\/06\/19\/amref-play-key-role-universal-health-coverage\/"},"modified":"2018-11-29T04:35:49","modified_gmt":"2018-11-29T04:35:49","slug":"amref-play-key-role-universal-health-coverage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amref.org\/enterprises\/2018\/06\/19\/amref-play-key-role-universal-health-coverage\/","title":{"rendered":"Amref to play key role in Universal Health Coverage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Hezron Ochiel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amref.org\">Amref Health Africa<\/a> has outlined proposals to help accelerate the attainment of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/health_financing\/universal_coverage_definition\/en\/\">Universal Health Coverage<\/a> (UHC). The health institution has partnered with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhif.or.ke\/healthinsurance\/\">Kenya\u2019s National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF)<\/a> to fast-track the scale-up of UHC by using Community Health Workers (CHWs) as agents for NHIF registration at community level. Speaking during the UHC Financing Forum in Washington in April, Amref Health Africa Group CEO Dr Githinji Gitahi said that the organisation has already aligned its programmes in readiness for the roll-out.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBorrowing from our corporate strategy, we target to increase \ufb01nancial protection for communities by working with CHWs to educate them on the importance of getting medical cover,\u201d he said. \u201cWe also target to mobilise donor resources for health subsidies. We want to use the donor money to catalyse UHC.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The main principal of UHC is that everyone is able to access basic health services without \ufb01nancial hitches. In many countries of sub-Saharan Africa, where out-of-pocket expenditure pushes large numbers of households into extreme poverty, \ufb01nancial protection is particularly necessary, yet non-existent.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Gitahi said that Amref has o\ufb00ered to act as an implementer for governments, giving them an avenue to channel funds to various programmes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSince we are strong in training, we will continue to build capacities of health workers and institutions,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amref.org\/news\/community-health-workers-in-kenya-need-pay\/\">Amref has been advocating for the recognition and remuneration of CHWs,<\/a> and their integration into the formal health workforce in African countries as they are pivotal to achieving UHC.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Gitahi noted that capacity building for citizens is a priority as it will go a long way in creating social accountability. He said that citizens should be involved in the budget making processes, designing health programmes and demanding for their rights.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe want citizens to be proactive. We want them to ask hard questions, such as \u2018where did our money go\u2019?
