Dr. Yidnekachew Mogessie holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa. He is currently a physician at St. Paul’s, overseeing the COVID-19 critical care unit as well as the disaster response unit. He has a vibrant track record of leadership and advocacy related to youth reproductive health at multiple levels, including the FP2020 United Nations, Federal Ministry of Health, donor agencies, and civil society. Dr. Yidnekachew serves young people in many capacities; he is the Youth Focal Point for Ethiopia with the United Nations, the Youth Delegate at the Federal Ministry of Health’s Adolescence and Youth Health (AYH) working group, a Youth Advisory Board member for the Royal Danish Embassy, the Country Coordinator for the International Youth Alliance on Family Planning in Ethiopia, and an Amref Youth Advisory Group (AYAG) member. To date, he has trained approximately 20,000 youth on a number of topics including leadership, global health, sexual and reproductive health, and meaningful youth engagement. He has been recognized for his leadership and contribution to positive youth development by a number of local and international bodies, among them the Packard Foundation and Women Deliver, and is one of 12 global recipients of the 2019 ECFMG/FAIMER award for students who have made outstanding contributions to youth, community health, and wellbeing.
