Our Work

Driving Health Transformation Through Primary Health Care

With over 60 years of experience, Amref Health Africa in Kenya is a trusted partner in advancing health equity across the country. During our last strategic cycle (2018–2022), we reached over 30 million people by collaborating with national and county governments, civil society, and development partners to enhance Kenya’s health system.

Our 2023–2030 Strategy  sets an ambitious course: to transform community health through Primary Health Care, with a strong focus on women, young people, and underserved populations.

Our work is anchored in two core pillars:

i) People-centred health systems, and

ii) Social determinants of health.

Our Big Bets

Amref Health Africa in Kenya has boldly aligned its efforts with the global and the Government of Kenya’s Health Agenda by implementing five strategic and innovative initiatives. These initiatives, known as our “big bets,” demonstrate Amref’s commitment to improving the health outcomes of the Kenyan population, with the baseline year set at 2023 and the target year of 2030.

We aim to Catalyse Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2026 through optimising the functionality and sustainability of Primary Healthcare Networks (PCNs), and integrating comprehensive strategies for skilling, equipping, remunerating, and managing the performance of community health promoters

Through this flagship, our investments aim to help reduce the maternal mortality ratio in Kenya from 355 to below 70 deaths per 100,000 live births, and the neonatal mortality rate from 21 to under 12 per 1,000 live births by 2030.

This flagship commitment aims to reduce malaria incidence by at least 90% by 2030 through climate-smart strategies that address shifting transmission patterns and protect vulnerable communities.

This flagship is focused on breaking the transmission and elimination of four Preventive Chemotherapy (PC) Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) endemic in the country: Intestinal Worms (Soil-Transmitted Helminths), Bilharzia (Schistosomiasis), Elephantiasis (Lymphatic Filariasis), and Trachoma.

This flagship aims to reduce premature deaths from non-communicable diseases by one-third through prevention and treatment by 2030.

This flagship aims to achieve and sustain universal access to medical oxygen across all health facilities in Kenya by 2030, improving survival outcomes in maternal, child, surgical, and emergency care.

This flagship aims to achieve and sustain universal readiness to tackle epidemics across all levels of the healthcare system, protecting communities and saving lives nationwide
