Building Climate-Resilient Health Systems

At Amref Health Africa, we are dedicated to strengthening leadership and governance to build climate-resilient health systems. During the African Regional Conference on Climate Change in August 2023, we contributed to developing ‘The Common Africa Position on Climate Change and Health,’ which was later adopted at the Africa Climate Summit. We also supported African Ministers in presenting a unified stance at COP28’s inaugural Health Day, focusing on advancing climate and health financing. Looking ahead, Amref will focus on building political momentum to advance climate and health financing to establish resilient health systems across Africa, including Kenya.

We collaborated with the Kenya Meteorological Department and the National Drought Management Authority to establish a digital Community-Based Observation Network (CBON) to strengthen community climate resilience. This network will improve community resilience in the face of climate change, providing timely weather data to help communities adapt and respond effectively.

Amref has also been a strong advocate of the One Health approach, working closely with counties to implement integrated health solutions. Notably, we signed an MoU with Isiolo County and helped Turkana launch its first ‘One Health Strategy’ (2023-2027), focusing on infectious diseases, food safety, and environmental sustainability.

During this period, our Kimormor One Health advocacy efforts, funded by USAID, received a major boost. High-level delegation visits from the US government and the USAID/KEA mission team underscored the importance of our work. We also organised quarterly meetings with the County Assembly Committee members on health, rallying support and securing resource allocation for Kimormor One Health activities.

Amref remains committed to building climate-resilient health systems through strong leadership, innovation, and partnerships, fostering healthier communities equipped to face climate challenges.
