Building Stronger Health Systems for Our Communities
At Amref Health Africa in Kenya, we are committed to strengthening community health through social accountability and strong health systems. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and partners, we hosted the National Community-Led Advocacy Forum to promote sustainable health financing and community-led responses, advocating for primary health care and universal health coverage (UHC).
The forum brought together diverse participants, including citizen advocates, TB/HIV-affected individuals, community representatives, and officials from both County and National government, to discuss challenges and needs, fostering partnerships for UHC progress. Supported by the Global Fund, Amref and grassroots partners are establishing sustainable community-led advocacy initiatives. Using tools like community-led monitoring and community scorecards, we empower communities to provide feedback on healthcare service quality, improving both primary health care and community services.
We are also working with the Ministry of Health to develop strategies for engaging UHC beneficiaries and improving public participation. Moving forward, we plan to enhance primary care networks by integrating community-led monitoring, ensuring better service quality for our communities.
In leadership and governance, we collaborated with the State Department of Public Health to address healthcare regulation gaps, resulting in the formation of a health regulation and oversight task force led by the Kenya Health Professions Oversight Authority. We also held strategic meetings with governors and county executive committee members to discuss implementing health laws and securing their commitment. Through a leadership innovation program with Harvard University, we trained leaders to drive change in the health sector.
Amref continues to offer policy advice to the Council of Governors and Ministry of Health, including analysing health acts and reviewing the 2024/25 Budget Policy Statement to improve health systems and service delivery in Kenya.
At Amref Health Africa, we believe that by working together and empowering our communities, we can create a healthier future for all.
