Amref Health Africa in Kenya\u2019s work is guided by the promises of: improving the lives of disadvantaged people through better health, bridging gaps between communities, health systems and governments, being a leading force for advocacy for health system reforms, and a leader in the NGO community, by developing and documenting best practices and training programs.<\/p>\n

Our work in the current strategic period (2018-2022) is informed by changes in Kenya\u2019s health environment such as the burden of disease caused by infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases and maternal and neonatal mortality, the human resource for health gap; the devolved system of governance; Kenya\u2019s under-investment in health; the vibrant youthful population in Kenya; and the shift from MDGs to SDGs.<\/p>\n

Our Strategic Plan<\/a> is aligned to the Constitution of Kenya, the country\u2019s Vision 2030 and Amref Health Africa\u2019s Corporate Strategy. It seeks to support and spur Kenya\u2019s movement towards attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals, and is therefore built on three strategic pillars:<\/p>\n

Amref Health Africa is committed to revolutionizing healthcare by driving universal health coverage through functional and sustainable Primary Care Networks (PCNs) by 2026. Our vision is to create a healthcare system that is accessible, inclusive, and community-driven, ensuring that every individual receives the care they need where they live, work, and play. Central to this mission is the integration of Community Health Promoters (CHPs), who are well-trained, properly equipped, and adequately supported. Investing in their skills and resources ensures these frontline health workers can deliver essential primary care services directly to the communities they serve. This approach places the power of healthcare in the hands of individuals and families, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility for their health. In addition to providing essential health services, we are working to create a sustainable, community-led primary health system that is resilient and adaptable to the evolving needs of the population. Engaging local communities in health promotion and prevention will empower individuals to become active participants in their health journeys. This strategy not only improves health outcomes but also strengthens the overall healthcare system by reducing the strain on hospitals and specialized care facilities. Through our efforts, we aspire to build lasting health solutions that are tailored to the unique needs of each community, ensuring that primary health care becomes the foundation of a healthier, more resilient future for all. By 2026, we envision a robust primary health care network that empowers communities and transforms healthcare across Africa<\/p>\n

+<\/i>PILLAR 2: Social Determinants of Health<\/span><\/a><\/dt>
<\/p>\n

At Amref, we are actively addressing social determinants of health by advocating for policies that promote healthy living and working environments, fair employment, and gender-transformative practices that break down socio-cultural barriers. We are also ensuring social protection across the lifespan and equitable access to services, including through public financing. In our programming, we are empowering women and young people as agents of change in their communities, while advocating for social programs and policies that economically uplift vulnerable groups, especially women and youth, so they can access quality health services. At Amref, intersectionality is a core strategic theme. We are tackling healthcare challenges that intersect with climate crises, the growing youth demographic, rapid urbanization, and geopolitical conflicts. Our service delivery models already address health needs arising from climate-related events, such as vector-borne and water-borne diseases, malnutrition, and maternal care for displaced populations. We are also advocating for policies that improve access to education, livelihoods, and financial protection for women and young people, ensuring equitable health outcomes<\/p>\n
