01 \/ THE CONTEXT<\/div>\n

Building stronger systems for primary health care.<\/em><\/h2>\n <\/div>\n
\n

\n Kenya faced significant challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Across the country,\n many areas face weak health systems, high levels of poverty and economic insecurity,\n and challenges arising from poor health-seeking behaviours.\n <\/p>\n

\n Building on the previous project supported by Moderna Charitable Foundation,\n Amref\u2019s Project THRIVE further strengthens health systems to effectively and sustainably\n deliver quality primary health care services to communities in Nakuru and Nyeri counties in Kenya.\n <\/p>\n

Tailored interventions improve uptake<\/h3>\n

\n Men continue to visit health facilities less often than women, largely due to long waits,\n work schedules and low awareness of available services. Project THRIVE found that participation\n increased when services were adapted to men\u2019s needs.\n <\/p>\n <\/div>\n\n

\n

Domestic financing is essential for resilience<\/h3>\n

\n Following intermittent commodity shortages, the project worked with Nyeri county to allocate\n supplementary funds from the Health Sector Service Fund to support procurement of essential\n medicines and commodities for affected primary health facilities. Allocating public resources\n for health system gaps is essential for sustainability.\n <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n
