#NoMoreViolence

Daring to speak up

The goal of our campaign “#NoMoreViolence: Daring to speak up” is to make people aware of the rise of gender-based violence because of COVID-19 and to encourage everyone to speak up. Amref is working as a key-player to end violence towards women and girls in Africa

35%

of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence

4 million

girls around the world are at risk of undergoing FGM/C

2 million

girls under 18 are married in Sub-Saharan Africa each year

No more Violence

#NoMoreViolence Dare to speak up by Amref Health Africa

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic more and more women and girls worldwide are at risk of gender-based violence (GBV). Gender-based violence includes physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse, but also economic or educational deprivation.

1 in 3 women worldwide has experienced some form of physical or sexual violence in their lives. Due to the COVID-19 crisis more and more women and girls are at risk of gender based violence. This needs to end!

Because of the pandemic, social and protective networks like schools are disrupted. Physical distancing measures are put in place and people are encouraged to stay at home. The risk of intimate partner violence is likely to increase.

Dare to speak up against gender-based violence and join our campaign “#NoMoreViolence: Daring to speak up” to end gender-based violence from the 9th of June until 14th of June.

WHY

Zero tolerance to FGM?

  • Detrimental to women's health
  • Bleeding, infection and sometimes death
  • Maternal complications including Fistula, infertility & inability to deliver vaginally
  • Newborn death as a result of maternal complications
  • Affects sexual activity negatively
  • Early Marriages
  • Increased school drop outs

AMREF's Approach

Amref Health Africa is committed to a future without gender-based violence like child marriages, teenage pregnancies, domestic violence and female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C). To date, we have helped about 20,000 girls in Kenya and Tanzania avoid FGM/C.
