{"id":541,"date":"2021-03-31T09:00:54","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T06:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amref.org\/tanzania\/?p=541"},"modified":"2021-03-31T09:00:56","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T06:00:56","slug":"church-leaders-join-efforts-towards-combating-hiv-aids-in-the-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amref.org\/tanzania\/2021\/03\/31\/church-leaders-join-efforts-towards-combating-hiv-aids-in-the-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"Church Leaders join efforts towards combating  HIV\/AIDS in the communities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Father&nbsp;Emanuel&nbsp;J Masoud, who is&nbsp;at the&nbsp;forefront&nbsp;&nbsp;leading the&nbsp;&nbsp;HIV\/AIDS section at the Anglican Church in Zanzibar&nbsp;believes&nbsp;that;&nbsp;&nbsp;the church has&nbsp;&nbsp;a&nbsp; great contribution and&nbsp;&nbsp;ability to&nbsp;&nbsp;influence people&nbsp; on the&nbsp;ground&nbsp;when it comes to&nbsp;ways of reducing or&nbsp;&nbsp;combating HIV\/AIDS.&nbsp;Amref Health Africa Tanzania, through its five-year&nbsp;Afya Kamilifu project which is funded by<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>PEPFAR through the US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Tanzania&nbsp;supports the Anglican Church which is the lead implementing partner in&nbsp;preventing&nbsp;HIV\/AIDS in Zanzibar.&nbsp; Given the respected position&nbsp;of&nbsp;&nbsp;the church leaders in the society , Mr. Emanuel Masoud&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and other&nbsp;&nbsp;church leaders have&nbsp;developed&nbsp;a very&nbsp; instrumental&nbsp;strategy&nbsp; which&nbsp; involve&nbsp;&nbsp;facilitators&nbsp;who initiate&nbsp; various&nbsp;&nbsp;conversation&nbsp;with the focus to&nbsp; the&nbsp;&nbsp;HIV\/AIDS&nbsp;issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emanuel Masoud believe that\u00a0\u00a0 creating more awareness and\u00a0measures to be taken\u00a0by the society members, HIV\/AIDS can be combated. His\u00a0experience\u00a0also indicated\u00a0that,\u00a0leveraging their\u00a0influence as church\u00a0leaders to\u00a0the\u00a0communities, most of them will rely on such\u00a0powerful information\u00a0as a\u00a0result changes will be noticed. \u201cWe have so far witnessed success when it comes to HIV voluntary counseling and testing. Many people, including men, are turning up for the exercise\u2026. It is really going well, \u201csays Fr Masoud.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With their headquarters in&nbsp;Mkunazini,&nbsp;this Anglican&nbsp;Church currently&nbsp;operates in&nbsp;five stations. Apart from the Anglican&nbsp;Church,&nbsp;&nbsp; the project has also&nbsp;engaged&nbsp;the Lutheran church that is&nbsp;located&nbsp;at Mwanakerekwe while the third station is the Tanzania Assemblies of God church&nbsp;which is&nbsp;located at Kariakoo.&nbsp;&nbsp;The other&nbsp;two churches involved in this project are&nbsp;the Catholic Church located at Shangani&nbsp;and another&nbsp;Anglican Church&nbsp;which&nbsp;is located&nbsp;at Dole.&nbsp;All&nbsp;stations are&nbsp;in Zanzibar.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\u00a0the church leaders implementing through such\u00a0\u00a0 approach, Amref is regularly provide\u00a0onsite support\u00a0and\u00a0mentorship.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Religious leaders act as mobilisers during church services on health matters including topic on HIV\/AIDS.\u00a0Despite the COVID-19 pandemic\u00a0 challenges ,\u00a0 their efforts has already\u00a0 avails some\u00a0remarkable\u00a0 achievement\u00a0 which includes; about\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>1400<\/strong>\u00a0people reached with voluntary counselling and testing services since\u00a0the project\u00a0\u00a0started in April 2020, whereby\u00a0\u00a0<strong>742<\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0\u00a0women and\u00a0<strong>601\u00a0<\/strong>. Generally\u00a0 it is not normal to have such number\u00a0 for\u00a0\u00a0men\u00a0to show-up, this\u00a0 is a very positive result and it encourages since men\u00a0\u00a0are usually\u00a0\u00a0resist\u00a0\u00a0to\u00a0\u00a0voluntarily\u00a0 go for\u00a0\u00a0HIV testing; Explained Fr.\u00a0Emanuel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact that the tests are taken in churches, the process&nbsp;has a high sense of confidentiality between the clients and the service providers. Health services in these stations are provided only on weekends&nbsp;for a&nbsp;one&nbsp;day which&nbsp;seems to be not enough comparing with&nbsp;the&nbsp;demand.&nbsp;&nbsp;The&nbsp;HIV&nbsp;service&nbsp;provisions have been complemented with checkup for blood pressure and diabetes which attracts many&nbsp;other&nbsp;people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of&nbsp;<strong>1400<\/strong>&nbsp;people who tested for HIV,&nbsp;<strong>15<\/strong>&nbsp;of them were HIV positive and&nbsp;<strong>12<\/strong>&nbsp;were&nbsp;immediately&nbsp;&nbsp;enrolled to care and treatment,&nbsp;while the rest (3) have&nbsp;are yet to be&nbsp;reached, follow-up is ongoing. The key message delivered to the congregates is that proper adherence to treatment helps to suppress the virus and reduce the chances of spreading HIV to their partners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not only the churchgoers that get tested; church leaders that&nbsp;&nbsp;conducts&nbsp;&nbsp;mobilization, including priests, clergies, pastors and nuns&nbsp;are&nbsp;&nbsp;all get tested. This increases the spiritual morality among the&nbsp;congregates. Amref has also trained the church lead<em>ers in preparation of&nbsp;<\/em><em>encouraging&nbsp;<\/em><em>messages&nbsp;<\/em><em>(<\/em><em>jumbe<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>za<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>matumanini<\/em><em>).&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;More importantly, the program has been able to increase the number of men coming for VCT services, however,&nbsp;they shave one request to the&nbsp;project team and Amref at large,&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe call upon Amref and other partners to deepen technical training to non-medical staff so we can cover the limited shortage of medical personnel in certain health settings, especially in hard-to-reach rural areas,\u201d&nbsp;concluded Fr&nbsp;Emanuel&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Father&nbsp;Emanuel&nbsp;J Masoud, who is&nbsp;at the&nbsp;forefront&nbsp;&nbsp;leading the&nbsp;&nbsp;HIV\/AIDS section at the Anglican Church in Zanzibar&nbsp;believes&nbsp;that;&nbsp;&nbsp;the church has&nbsp;&nbsp;a&nbsp;
