Long Term Socio-economic Effects of COVID-19 in Rural KENYA
When the novel coronavirus arrived in sub-Saharan Africa, many feared the continent would not be able to cope with the impact of such a fast-evolving pandemic. Memories of how the Ebola virus overwhelmed weak health systems in West Africa in 2014 loomed largely, and many braced themselves for the socio-economic fallout. But with COVID-19, this never fully materialized. In this research brief, we show that despite falls in income, in the long-term rural communities in western Kenya found a way to cope economically with COVID-19 and its containment measures.
As the world battled with COVID-19, to the African region, this was the latest in a long list of infectious diseases crippling its health systems. A recent WHO report notes that out of all the 215 million malaria cases reported globally in 2019, 94% were from sub-Saharan Africa. Half of the infections in Africa were concentrated in five countries where malaria is endemic. What this implies is that Africa cannot yet join the rest of the world in celebrating the sustained reduction of malaria cases witne

The prevalence and associated factors of undernutrition among under-five children in South Sudan using the standardized monitoring and assessment of relief and transitions (SMART) methodology
Conflict regions bear the heaviest brunt of food insecurity and undernutrition. South Sudan is one of the fragile countries following years of conflict that led to large displacements. Moderate to severe undernutrition among under-five children has been associated with elevated morbidity and mortality. This study, therefore, was conducted to assess the magnitude and factors influencing undernutrition (wasting, underweight and stunting) among children aged 6 to 59 months in Yambio County, South Sudan.

Cytokines and Onchocerciasis-Associated Epilepsy, a Pilot Study and Review of the Literature
Neuro-inflammation may be associated with onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE) but thus far very few immunological studies have been performed in children with this form of epilepsy. In a pilot study we measured the cytokine levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of persons with OAE from Maridi, South Sudan, and from Mosango, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and compared these results with cytokine levels in CSF of Africans with non-OAE neurological disorders, and Europeans with epilepsy or other neurological conditions. The following cytokines were studied: IL-
