Knowledge, attitudes and practices of traditional birth attendants in pastoralist communities of Laikipia and Samburu counties, Kenya
In rural Kenya, semi-nomadic pastoralist communities are underserved by the formal health system, experience high maternal and neonatal mortality, and rely primarily on TBAs for delivery care, despite Government proscription of TBA-assisted births. This study examined the knowledge, attitude and practices of TBAs serving these communities to assess the potential for collaboration between TBAs and SBAs. Read More >>>

Walking Together: Towards a Collaborative Model for Maternal Health Care in Pastoralist Communities of Laikipia and Samburu, Kenya
In response to low uptake of skilled birth attendance in pastoralist areas, a collaborative model was developed in Laikipia and Samburu, integrating traditional birth attendants (TBAs) with skilled birth attendants (SBAs) to improve maternal care. Through community engagement and research, the model promotes shared roles in antenatal and postnatal care, respectful maternity practices, and facility redesigns to better serve local needs, aiming to enhance safety and ease the transition to SBA-led births. Intersections between climate change and female genital mutilation among the Maasai of Kajiado County, Kenya

Factors influencing place of delivery for pastoralist women in Kenya
Kenya’s high maternal mortality ratio can be partly explained by the low proportion of women delivering in health facilities attended by skilled birth attendants (SBAs). Many women continue to give birth at home attended by family members or traditional birth attendants (TBAs). This is particularly true for pastoralist women in Laikipia and Samburu counties, Kenya. This paper investigates the socio-demographic factors and cultural beliefs and practices that influence place of delivery for these pastoralist women. Association between stage at diagnosis and knowledge on cervical cancer among patients in a Kenyan tertiary hospital
In Kenya, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women; almost half of all women with invasive cervical cancer are diagnosed at a late stage. Few women are aware of the symptoms and risk factors of cervical cancer and that its precursor lesions are detectable through screening thus most women seek treatment when the cancer is at an advanced stage. The study explored the influence of cervical cancer awareness on stage at diagnosis in patients attending Kenyatta National Hospital. Facility factors influencing utilization of active management of third stage of labour among skilled birth attendants in Kiambu County, Kenya
Post-Partum Hemorrhage (PPH) accounts for 34% of maternal deaths in Kenya. Active management of third stage of labour (AMTSL) is a World Health Organization and Ministry of Health of Kenya approved protocol for reducing maternal mortality and morbidity arising from postpartum hemorrhage. Kiambu County in Kenya records an average of six maternal deaths per month, out of which, two are due to PPH. This paper analyses how facility factors influence utilization of this protocol in Kiambu County. Authors: Muiruri Felarmine, Osur Joachim, Okello Agina Read More
