Epilepsy-related stigma and cost in two onchocerciasis-endemic areas in South Sudan: A pilot descriptive study
Epilepsy is a major public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in resource-limited rural villages where persons with epilepsy (PWE) are often confronted with a wide treatment gap, frequent stigma and high cost of epilepsy care. The study investigated stigma and economic cost related to epilepsy in the states of Maridi and Amadi in South Sudan, two onchocerciasis endemic areas with high epilepsy prevalence. Effect of onchocerciasis elimination measures on the incidence of epilepsy in Maridi, South Sudan: a 3-year longitudinal, prospective, population-based study
High onchocerciasis transmission predisposes endemic communities to a high epilepsy burden. The 4·4% epilepsy prevalence documented in 2018 in Maridi, South Sudan, prompted the strengthening of onchocerciasis elimination measures. Community-directed treatment with ivermectin was implemented annually in 2017, 2018, and 2019, interrupted in 2020, and re-implemented biannually in 2021. We aimed to assess the effect of these interventions, along with slash and clear vector control on the incidence of epilepsy, including nodding syndrome. Read

Viral load scale-up in South Sudan: Strategic implementation of tools to monitor HIV treatment success among people living with HIV
As access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) expands in South Sudan, achieving viral load (VL) suppression has become a key priority to sustain progress in the HIV response. Between 2017 and 2020, the PEPFAR-supported program implemented a comprehensive VL scale-up plan across 58 facilities, processing 59,600 VL samples. This initiative led to significant improvements, including reduced turnaround times (from 150 to 28 days), lower sample rejection rates (from 1.9% to 0.8%), and better documentation of ART and VL data. Notably, the average time from detecting a high VL to conducting a repeat test

High Prevalence of Epilepsy in an Onchocerciasis-Endemic Area in Mvolo County, South Sudan: A Door-To-Door Survey
A 2020 household survey in Mvolo County, South Sudan, revealed a high burden of epilepsy in an onchocerciasis-endemic area. Among 15,699 individuals, 5.1% were suspected of having epilepsy, with 98.1% of those confirmed. The epilepsy prevalence was 50.8 per 1,000, and nodding syndrome prevalence was 22.4 per 1,000. Risk factors included younger age, male gender, skin itching, blindness, and proximity to the Naam River. Ov16 seropositivity among children and low ivermectin uptake indicated ongoing transmission of Onchocerca volvulus. The study calls for urgent strengthening of onchoce

“Slash and Clear”, a Community-Based Vector Control Method to Reduce Onchocerciasis Transmission by Simulium sirbanum in Maridi, South Sudan: A Prospective Study
This study evaluated the effectiveness of a community-based vector control method, “slash and clear,” in reducing black fly populations and Onchocerca volvulus transmission in Maridi County, South Sudan. Conducted at the Maridi dam, a breeding site for Simulium damnosum s.l., the intervention significantly reduced black fly biting rates by over 90% for more than six months and maintained a reduction of under 50% after twelve months. Parity rates also dropped from 13% to 5.6%. The black flies were identified as Simulium sirbanum. These findings suggest that when combine
