Disease Control, Prevention and Management

Tuberculosis (TB)

Amref Health Africa in Kenya leads national efforts to end Tuberculosis through a community-centred, health systems–strengthening approach that prioritises prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and sustained care. As the non-state Principal Recipient of the Global Fund TB Grant, Amref works closely with the Ministry of Health, county governments, civil society, and the private sector to expand access to quality TB services across all 47 counties.

The programme focuses on finding people with TB, ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment, and supporting adherence through community health structures. It strengthens capacity at national and county levels by training health workers, engaging Community Health Promoters, and operationalising public–private mix models that extend TB care to faith-based and private facilities.

Amref’s work also integrates TB services into broader Primary Health Care, linking TB, HIV, and nutrition interventions while addressing the social determinants of health, such as stigma, livelihoods, and awareness. Through these efforts, Amref is building resilient, people-centred systems that bring Kenya closer to a TB-free generation.

Malaria

Amref Health Africa in Kenya leads a nationwide, community-driven malaria response that promotes the vision of a malaria-free Kenya. As the non-state Principal Recipient for the Global Fund Malaria Grant Cycle Seven (GC7), Amref supports the delivery of targeted interventions aligned with the Kenya Malaria Strategy 2023–2027 across 12 counties.

Working with the Ministry of Health, county governments, and partners such as GSK, Johnson and Johnson, and the Gates Foundation, Amref enhances prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance within the existing community health strategy. Trained Community Health Promoters (CHPs) lead promotive, preventive, and rehabilitative actions to ensure timely malaria case management and effective referral services at the community level.

Through these integrated, people-centred efforts, Amref is reducing malaria-related illness and deaths, strengthening resilient health systems, and empowering communities to sustain malaria elimination gains. Amref’s malaria program has been implemented in the following counties in Kenya:

Busia, Vihiga, Kakamega, Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, Bungoma, Homabay, Nandi, Kisii, Kericho and Nyamira

Laboratory Systems Strengthening

Amref Health Africa in Kenya plays a pivotal role in strengthening the country’s laboratory systems, which are a cornerstone of disease control, prevention, and management. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, County Governments, CDC, and other partners, Amref enhances the capacity, connectivity, and quality of laboratories to ensure accurate diagnosis, timely surveillance, and effective response to health threats.

Through the Sustainable Laboratory Quality Systems (SLQS) project, Amref is strengthening Kenya’s diagnostic capacity for HIV, TB, and emerging health threats, improving quality management systems, and supporting laboratories toward accreditation and sustainability. Complementing this effort, the Integrated Specimen Referral System (ISRS) ensures efficient, safe, and timely transport of specimens and results across human, animal, and environmental health sectors, advancing the One Health approach.
