Family and Reproductive Health

Amref Health Africa’s Family & Reproductive Health (FRH) programme advances equitable, integrated, and rights-based health services for women, newborns, adolescents, young people, and families. Rooted in Primary Health Care (PHC) and community systems, our work strengthens the entire continuum of care from households to health facilities ensuring that people can access quality services throughout their lives. By partnering with national and county governments, communities, and health workers, we help build resilient health systems that respond to local needs and reduce preventable illness and death.

Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (MNH)

Amref Health Africa works to ensure that every pregnancy is safe and every newborn has a healthy start to life. We strengthen the quality of care across the maternal and newborn continuumfrom antenatal care to delivery, postnatal services, and early newborn care. Our work improves access to skilled birth attendance, strengthens emergency obstetric and newborn care, and enhances referral systems to ensure timely management of complications. Through clinical mentorship, respectful maternity care, and health worker capacity strengthening, we support facilities to deliver safe, dignified, and evidence-based care that reduces preventable maternal and neonatal deaths.

Primary Health Care (PHC)

Strong PHC systems are the foundation of sustainable health improvements. Amref Health Africa supports the establishment and strengthening of functional Primary Care Networks (PCNs) that link community health services, primary care facilities, and referral hospitals. By building the capacity of Community Health Promoters (CHPs), improving service readiness at frontline facilities, and strengthening referral pathways, we bring essential services closer to where people live. Our PHC work promotes continuity of care, early detection of health risks, and integrated service delivery across the life course.

Sexual & Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)

Amref’s SRHR work ensures that women and young people can make informed decisions about their bodies and futures. We expand access to comprehensive, youth-friendly, and rights-based services, including family planning, prevention and management of sexually transmitted infections, post-abortion care, and support for survivors of gender-based violence. Alongside service delivery,Amref works with communities to address stigma, misinformation, and harmful social norms that limit access to care, while strengthening the integration of SRHR services within PHC systems.

Nutrition

Good nutrition is essential for healthy pregnancies, child growth, and long-term wellbeing. Amref Health Africa integrates nutrition into maternal, newborn, and primary health services, supporting maternal nutrition counselling, promotion of optimal infant and young child feeding practices, and early identification of growth challenges. By strengthening preventive nutrition services and linking communities to care, Amref helps families build healthy foundations that support children’s physical and cognitive development.

Education & Early Childhood Development (ECD)

Amref Health Africa recognises that children’s early years shape lifelong health and learning. Through the Education and Early Childhood Development portfolioAmref integrates nurturing care, early stimulation, and caregiver support into PHC and community systems. We strengthen the capacity of health workers and CHPs to promote responsive caregiving, developmental monitoring, and caregiver wellbeing, while supporting play-based and psychosocial interventions in vulnerable communities. By embedding ECD within health services, we help children not only survive, but thrivelaying the groundwork for healthier, more resilient communities.
