Menstrual Hygiene Management Practices and Associated Factors Among Adolescent Schoolgirls in Rural Tanzania: A School-Based Cross-Sectional Study
Monday, 30 June, 2025
A cross-sectional study in Kilindi district, northeastern Tanzania, assessed menstrual hygiene management (MHM) among 490 adolescent schoolgirls. It found that only 44.5% had good MHM knowledge, and 62.7% reported poor MHM practices. Factors linked to better knowledge included being older, receiving menstrual information from grandmothers, having missed school due to menstruation, and living in larger households. Poor practices were associated with relying on media for menstrual information. The study highlights low MHM knowledge and high rates of poor practices, calling for targeted interventions in schools to improve MHM education, facilities, and social support.
