Pili Daud from Nyehunge is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. She has overcome great adversity in her life and has emerged stronger and more determined than ever before. Pili is a fistula survivor, a condition that affects many women in Tanzania and other parts of the world. Fistula is a devastating condition that occurs when a woman’s reproductive tract is injured during childbirth resulting into a hole in the birth canal and bladder/urinary tract and/or rectum. The result is that the woman becomes incontinent and is unable to control her urine or feces. This can be a debilitating condition, both physically and socially.

But Pili is not a victim. She is a fighter. She refused to let fistula define her life and decided to take matters into her own hands. With the help of the Amref fistula project, a partnership between Amref Health Africa UK, Amref Health Africa Tanzania, MAPERECE, and Bugando Medical Centre, Pili was able to receive the treatment she needed to overcome her condition. The program provides fistula survivors with medical treatment, counseling, and support to help them get back on their feet and start living normal life again.

With renewed hope and a newfound sense of purpose, Pili decided to start a small business selling vegetables in their local market. This provided her with a source of income that allowed her to support herself and her family. She used her earnings from her vegetable business to renovate her house. Pili is now living in a comfortable and safe home, thanks to her determination and hard work.

Pili’s story of resilience and determination is an inspiration to us all. She has overcome great adversity and has emerged as a successful businesswoman and a role model in her community. Pili’s story serves as a reminder that with the right support and encouragement, anyone can overcome the challenges they face and achieve their dreams. On Fistula Day, we honor Pili and celebrate all the fistula survivors who have shown us what true strength and determination look like.
