“Look at our environment, Clean as WE ARE!”, Paulina’s Feedback
Paulina Kijo, a Community Development Officer at Kilawalani Ward, Ilala District was trained by Amref ’s TAKA NI MALI Project on waste management and on municipal bylaws in regards to waste management in Tanzania.
After she had benefited from the waste management training, she got an opportunity to share the experience and take an initiative to continue imparting the gained knowledge to her community.
After the training we were able to identify two groups at our area and we have trained and provided support to the groups.
The groups are now collecting wastes found at our area and are recycling it to make charcoal which they eventually sell to earn some money as part of their daily income generating activity.
The groups are now registered, are official and stable hence they have recently become eligible to apply for loan so as to strengthen their work in waste management.
I am very grateful to Amref Health Africa for implement- ing this impactful project at our area it has been one of the beneficial project as waste management was a big gap and no specific fund had been allocated for years.
I would like to kindly request for the project interventions to be extended to other areas so that they also benefit fromthe waste management knowledge”, Ms. Kijo explained.
The Taka Ni Mali project demonstrated how community driven efforts can create lasting impact. It reduced cholera cases by 80% from 2017 to 2019 and empowered 145 women and youth, increasing employment by 60%. Income for these groups grew by 198%, and over 60,000 people were directly reached through awareness campaigns. The project also strengthened partnerships between local authorities and waste entrepreneurs. These successes were made possible with support from Madrid City Council and implemented by Amref Tanzania partnership with the Tanzanian Government.
