TRANSFORMING VACCINATION SERVICES IN ILEJE DISTRICT
Raid Ngotezi, The coordinator of vaccination services in Ileje District, Tanzania, is witnessing a remarkable transformation in immunization efforts, thanks to the recently launched IPC-I project implemented by Amref with support from UNICEF.
“Historically, Ileje District struggled with low vaccination rates, challenges such as staff shortages hindered the ability to reach all targeted beneficiaries effectively. However, the IPC-I project introduced innovative strategies particularly through the involvement of Community Health Workers (CHWs), who have been pivotal in bridging gaps in hard-to-reach areas.
The project trained 142 CHWs and 36 supervisors selected from 71 villages, the goal was clear: To improve communication between service providers and the community through the m-health platform innitiative. The project introduced eight modules that equipped CHWs with the skills needed to effectively engage with their communities.
Raid proudly reports on the tangible impact: “Child vaccination coverage has surged from 63% in April to an impressive 93% by May.” This substantial increase highlights the effectiveness of the IPC-I project’s approach in mobilizing communities and improving healthcare access. He acknowledges The use of Leap, the m-Health platform, an innovative online tool developed by Amref, which effectively facilitates training for community health workers in remote areas without internet access, ensuring efficient delivery of healthcare education.
As vaccination services continue to thrive under the IPC-I project, Raid Ngotezi remains optimistic about sustaining these gains and further improving health outcomes across Ileje District. The success story of Ileje District serves as a testament to the power of strategic partnerships and innovative approaches in achieving public health goals.
