“With Amref’s Waste Management Project, No More Outbreak of Diseases”, Beneficiary’s Story
“Since the inception of Taka ni Mali Project, we have experienced tremendous changes in our environment which we believe after a short time of period , will have a huge impact in the area of health.
As of now, the project has contributed to reduce the outbreak of diseases by 80% at our area because of the waste management component, most of people in our area are now aware that, waste can be used as an opportunity for income generation since by managing the waste they are reducing the risk of disease outbreaks such as diarrhea, malaria and others.
Out of the collected wastes, they can make and sell charcoal, soaps, plates, mugs etc. I am proud to see how clean the environment is, especially at the areas where the TNM projects implemented” Explained Dominica Balama, a Community Development Officer at Vingunguti Ward in Dar es Salaam.
The Taka Ni Mali project demonstrated how community driven efforts can create lasting impact. It reduced cholera cases by 80% from 2017 to 2019 and empowered 145 women and youth, increasing employment by 60%. Income for these groups grew by 198%, and over 60,000 people were directly reached through awareness campaigns. The project also strengthened partnerships between local authorities and waste entrepreneurs. These successes were made possible with support from Madrid City Council and implemented by Amref Tanzania partnership with the Tanzanian Government.
