“From 15 to only One Patient”, Khamis Mahamba
Khamis Mahamba, is an Environment Health Officer of Kipawa Ward at Ilala District. Khamis is among the Taka ni Mali beneficiary who have benefited by the training provided by the project to enhance capacity in the area of waste management. He had a great feedback to share regarding the TNM project success at Ilala area.
“The daily production of wastes at our area is approximately 43 tons, imagine the amount of waste and the possible effect that might have happened if the TNM project couldn’t have been implemented.
From the skills gained through the waste management training , we have used this as an opportunity to make our environment clean while earning some income out of the waste collected.
Through Amref ’s TAKA NI MALI Project the collected wastes are being used to make charcoal, soap etc.
Apart from this, the project has been very useful health wise in the sense that, we previously used to have fifteen 15 to ten 10 patients through the outbreak of diseases but now data indicates that , the number of patients has decreased to one 1 that means only one person was affected in our area.
This is very encouraging and we shall continue raise awareness and make use of the skills we have gained to ensure that, the impact of the TNM project lasts longer in our community ”, concluded Mr. Mahamba.
The Taka Ni Mali project demonstrated how community driven efforts can create lasting impact. It reduced cholera cases by 80% from 2017 to 2019 and empowered 145 women and youth, increasing employment by 60%. Income for these groups grew by 198%, and over 60,000 people were directly reached through awareness campaigns. The project also strengthened partnerships between local authorities and waste entrepreneurs. These successes were made possible with support from Madrid City Council and implemented by Amref Tanzania partnership with the Tanzanian Government.
