Jimmy Laurent Sebastian – Breaking Barriers to Save Lives
In Bungulwa village Jimmy Laurent Sebastian, a community health worker is making a profound impact. His involvement in the LEAP platform has equipped him with the knowledge and strategies needed to challenge long-standing traditions, particularly the belief that men should not accompany their wives to health clinics. Through his efforts, Jimmy has played a crucial role in reducing infant mortality and encouraging more mothers to deliver at health centers.
Reflecting on his journey, Jimmy shares, “In the past, some mothers gave birth at home, risking both their lives and their babies’. Now, nearly every mother visits the clinic by her 12th week of pregnancy.” This shift in attitude has contributed to better maternal and child health in the community.
Jimmy’s work has also focused on promoting shared responsibility in family health care. “The most fulfilling aspect of my work is seeing mothers and fathers support each other in following health guidance,” he says. “When families work together, everything improves.” His efforts highlight the importance of both partners being involved in healthcare decisions, which not only strengthens families but also improves health outcomes for both mothers and their children.
Jimmy has also been working to raise awareness in the community about the dangers of traditional practices and customs that have long been ingrained in families. The training provided through the program has enabled him and others to recognize, understand, and address these harmful practices, ensuring healthier futures for mothers and children.

A significant achievement of Jimmy’s work has been encouraging fathers to attend health clinics alongside their wives, which has been a pivotal change in community behavior. Thanks to the efforts of Jimmy and others, mothers are now attending clinics more regularly, with over four visits by the time they reach their 12th week of pregnancy. This proactive approach has led to better maternal health and a decrease in home births, creating a safer environment for both mothers and infants.
Jimmy’s dedication to improving the health and wellbeing of his community is truly transforming lives, breaking barriers, and ensuring that families have the support they need to thrive.
