STRENGTHENING IMMUNIZATION SERVICES: A COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER’S PERSPECTIVE
Julius Thomas Mwampashe, a dedicated community health worker based in Isangu village, Sanga Ward, Mbozi District Council, reflects on the transformative impact of the IPC-I project funded by UNICEF through Amref.
“Before receiving training from Amref,” Julius recalls, “our vaccination service targets were significantly low, we lacked the experience and strategies needed to effectively reach our community.”
However, following comprehensive training under the IPC-I project, Julius and his team experienced a notable shift in their approach and outcomes. ” The training has increased the efficiency of our work,” he states confidently. ” It equipped us with various techniques to assist households in accessing vaccination services and raised awareness about vaccination issues, significantly improving our performance.”
Julius highlights the tangible results of their efforts: “We can now identify children who have missed vaccinations and successfully bring them back for immunization.” In his area alone, the number of vaccinated children has risen substantially, reaching up to 50 children compared to previous figures. This progress is particularly significant considering challenges such as remote locations and the vast coverage area that health workers like Julius must navigate.

“In the past, some mothers gave birth at home and didn’t prioritize vaccinations,” Julius explains. “Through outreach efforts, we’ve been able to educate and transport them to health centers for vaccination services, leading to positive outcomes.” Despite these achievements, Julius acknowledges ongoing challenges, especially during the rainy season when accessing remote areas becomes even more difficult. “We face challenges with transportation and adequate teaching materials,” he notes. “We humbly request Amref’s continued support in providing these resources and tools to enhance our service delivery.”
Julius expresses heartfelt gratitude to Amref, UNICEF, and all donors whose support has been pivotal in improving vaccination services in their community. “The training has been invaluable,” he emphasizes. “It has enhanced our skills and understanding of vaccination services, transforming how we approach our work.” Through Julius Thomas Mwampashe’s dedication and the support of organizations like Amref and UNICEF, communities in Mbozi District Council are seeing improved health outcomes and increased vaccination coverage, demonstrating the power of targeted training and community engagement in public health initiatives.
