STEWARD MFEKEWE MKUMBWA “CHAMPION VACCINATION DRIVE

2nd September 2025

Steward Mfekewe Mkumbwa, one of the 300 trained community health workers (CHWs) in Isongole village, Isongole ward says, “Since the project began, we have been visiting households and identifying children without vaccinations, issuing them referrals, and successfully bringing them to the health centres for vaccination,” asserts.

Reflecting on the transformative impact of the initiative facilitated by Amref through UNICEF, Mkumbwa highlights the substantial progress made in just two months. Previously, the community faced challenges in locating unvaccinated children due to parental inertia and a lack of proactive outreach efforts.

“Now, with structured visits and targeted referrals, we ensure children receive necessary vaccinations,” Mkumbwa explains, emphasizing the feedback loop established with healthcare providers to verify immunization status and reduce the number of unvaccinated children.

Moreover, Mkumbwa underscores the pivotal role of local government leaders in promoting vaccination awareness. “Through our engagement, leaders now actively support us in communicating with mothers about the importance of vaccinations,” he states, applauding the newfound collaboration among CHWs, community leaders, and health center staff.

However, geographical barriers pose a persistent challenge, hindering timely healthcare service delivery. Mkumbwa advocates for project support in transportation to enhance outreach capabilities and mitigate delays caused by distance, particularly crucial during emergencies and adverse weather conditions.

In conclusion, Mkumbwa expresses gratitude for Amref and UNICEF’s support, underscoring the project’s educational value and the potential for continued improvement. “We hope for sustained assistance to expand our impact and ensure more children receive essential vaccinations,” he concludes optimistically, envisioning a healthier future for Isongole village through collaborative efforts and continued community engagement.
