Country Case Studies: Making Progress Towards Universal Health Coverage in Africa
Accelerating progress towards UHC in Africa involves measures to ensure equitable access to quality and affordable health services. Many countries in Africa are embarking on health financing reforms that aim at achieving UHC, with a strong pro-poor mandate. However, the relative benefits of these approaches currently lack strong evidence on how best these countries are faring.
Amref Health Africa has been at the forefront to advocate, support governments and communities implement mechanisms to help accelerate the attainment of Universal Health Coverage. Borrowing from the corporate strategy, Amref targets to among other measures, increase financial protection for communities by working with Community Health Workers (CHWs) to educate them on the importance of getting medical cover, recognition and remuneration of CHWs and their integration into the formal health workforce in African countries, mobilise donor resources for health subsidies, build capacities of health workers and institutions, and enhance accountability for government and partners in the utilisation of resources. It is against this background that Amref Health Africa commissioned the development of this case study.
