NO MORE SILENCE: A Heroes Campaign against Teenage Pregnancy

Funded by the Netherlands Embassy in Uganda, Amref Uganda is implementing the ‘Heroes for Gender Transformative Action’ program in 9 high-burden districts with Cordaid, and MIFUMI, the initiative aims to improve the well-being of youth and women, especially in underserved areas. It focuses on empowering girls, boys, and women in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) decision-making, improving service quality, and addressing gender norms. The ‘No More Silence’ Campaign, in partnership with TRAC FM, supports the Heroes For Gender Transformative Action program by identifying key issues promoting teenage pregnancies and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), creating awareness, promoting risk reduction behaviours, and increasing access to SRHR and SGBV services.

This poll question: “What is more common in your community?” ran on 3 radio stations: BABA FM in Jinja, Radio Ssese in Kalangala and Eastern Voice in Bugiri from 24th February to 8th March, 2024.

With 66% of respondents saying a teenage girl accidentally gets pregnant and then gets married off, the findings underscore the need to emphasise the importance of preventing  teenage pregnancies  and forced marriage following unintended pregnancy. The finds also show  the need to promote Comprehensive  sexual and Reproductive Health Education to empower young people make informed choices about their bodies and futures.
