United in the fight against FGM: A recap of the International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM.

The 6th of February is globally recognised as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). This day is designated by the United Nations to raise awareness about the harmful practice of FGM and to promote its elimination worldwide.

The International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM serves as a platform for us to advocate for the protection of the rights of women and girls, to condemn the practice of FGM as a violation of their human rights, and to mobilize support for efforts to end it. It also provides an opportunity to highlight the health consequences, psychological trauma, and social impacts of FGM on individuals and communities.

Watch Dr. Tonny Kapasandui, RMNCAH Programme Manager at Amref Uganda take on the Topic: FGM in Uganda on Gugudde TV hosted by Daniel Kamara.

Dr. Tonny Kapsandui, the Programme Manager RMNCAH at Amref Uganda took to Gugudde TV to educate and create awareness about the dangers, causes and effects of FGM women and girls. Female Genital Mutilation is a complex issue with various underlying causes and significant effects on the physical, psychological, and social well-being of individuals.

FGM stems from cultural norms, gender inequality, misconceptions about health, and social pressure, causing immediate and long-term physical and psychological harm. Addressing FGM demands education, community involvement, legal changes, healthcare access, and empowering women and girls.
