Risper Ominde is a 40-year-old wife and mother to five children. During the delivery of her sixth child, Risper experienced a difficult and prolonged labour because the baby was in an abnormal position. Although Risper received a caesarian section at Siaya County Hospital, the baby did not survive and Risper was left with a debilitating condition known as obstetric fistula, a hole in the birth canal that causes incontinence. Kenya is experiencing an upsurge in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) with current estimates showing that NCDs account for a third of the of disease burden. Cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, heart attacks, and stroke, account for most NCD related deaths in Kenya, followed by cancers, chronic lung diseases and diabetes. Majority of NCDs are the result of four behavioural risk factors: tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diets and harmful use of alcohol.
