Climate Change Adaptation for Healthy Ageing

Climate change poses significant challenges to healthy ageing, particularly for older adults who are more vulnerable to extreme weather events such as floods, heatwaves, and hurricanes. While ageing naturally involves a decline in functional ability, healthy ageing emphasizes maintaining well-being and independence in later life. The United Nations’ Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030) initiative aims to support older adults, their families, and communities in achieving this goal. However, the adverse effects of climate change may undermine these efforts, making adaptation essential. This chapter provides a narrative analysis of how older adults can adapt to climate-related and other crises to support healthy ageing, and offers policy recommendations to strengthen resilience and promote well-being in the face of environmental challenges.
