Amref Health Africa – Women in Global Health Africa Hub and Secretariat

Amref Health Africa (Amref) with its Headquarters in Nairobi, and several countries programs including Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda, South Africa, Southern Sudan and Kenya, West Africa amongst others. Amref Health Africa is one of the largest Africa Based International Health Development Humanitarian Organization.

With a vision of ‘Lasting health change in Africa’ Amref Health Africa is committed to improving health and healthcare in Africa as its core mission. Amref Health Africa aims at ensuring that every African can enjoy the right to good health, by helping to create vibrant networks of informed communities that work with empowered health care providers in strong health systems.

Amref Health Africa as the WGH Africa will establish and coordinate the following activities:

To achieve gender equality in global health leadership.
To foster gender transformative leadership, a leadership that is committed to achieving enabling environments for all genders.
To support a movement in global health that includes people regardless of gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, disability or age, such that all people can achieve their maximum leadership potential.
All national chapters will be considered equal and will have equal voice within the movement.

Membership

WGH Chapter membership will be open to all individuals from academia, government, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, and private sector, but not WHO banned sectors (see below and refer to WGH’s Business and Industry Guidelines).

Structure

Elders

Women Leaders who no longer hold public office; are independent and have no other vested interest. They should have earned international/regional trust, demonstrated integrity and built a reputation for inclusive, progressive leadership.

The Elders is an unusual organization with a distinct way of working. The Elders work strategically, focusing on areas where they are uniquely placed to make a difference. The Elders collectively advise where there is the greatest opportunity to make a real impact, whether this is:

Opening doors to gain access to decision-makers at the highest levels
Providing an independent voice that can speak out, challenge injustice and break taboos
Bringing people together to catalyze action and forge alliances
Highlighting neglected issues to generate media coverage and political attention

Advisory Council

Hosted at the Amref Enterprises Limited

Advisory Council responsibilities include;

Strategy Development
Program Creation and Planning
Development of Program Policy.
Planning and Implementing Public Relations
Fundraising for programs or projects
Communications and Visibility
The advisory committee will develop subcommittees which have assigned tasks in specific areas.

Country Chapters

National Chapters will be created and structured in country within appropriate frameworks. The form and organization of these chapters will vary depending on the country concerned, and the relevant local legal system.

National Chapters will:

Register local chapter
Recruit members
Capacity Development
Identify issues to address
Support Communication and advocacy for women in country
Develop and implement programs to respond to country needs
Participate in Advisory Committees to set regional agenda

Shared Values

Membership is based on a life-course approach, students, young professionals, early career to mid-career, senior and retirees can join WGH.
Individuals that self-identify with the field of global health can join WGH.
Membership in chapters in based on individual representation, not on behalf of an organization.
