Critical Success Factors for Deployment of Primary Health Care Networks and their Impact in Kenya
Kenya’s shift to Primary Care Networks (PCNs) is more than a health reform; it is a structural transformation. In just four months, 93 Primary Care Networks (PCNs) have been established across 37 counties, bringing care closer to where people live and breaking down the silos between communities and health facilities. Each network, designed around a hub-and-spoke model, rolls out in approximately three weeks at an average cost of USD 34,000.
The results are already compelling: maternal deaths drop to zero in some pilot areas, while hundreds of new h Read More -

Digital tracking of girls exposed to community led alternative rites of passage to prevent female genital mutilation/cutting, and child, early and forced marriages in Kenya: a longitudinal study
Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and child marriage (CEFM) are human rights violations. Over the years, various interventions have been introduced to combat these practices, including the Alternative Rite of Passage (ARP), which offers a meaningful rite of passage without the cut. However, ARPs have been criticized for lacking data on their effectiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the Community-Led Alternative Rite of Passage (CL-ARP) model on FGM/C, CEFM, and school retention for girls and young women.
Citizen science (CS) is an emerging approach in public health to harness the collective intelligence of individuals to augment traditional scientific efforts. However, citizens’ viewpoints, especially the hard-to--
reach population, is lacking in current outbreak-related literature. We aim to understand the awareness, readiness and feasibility of outbreak-related CS, including digitally enabled CS, in low-income and middle-income countries. -

Impact of annual community-directed treatment with ivermectin on the incidence of epilepsy in Mvolo, a two-year prospective study
The potential impact of cumulative community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI) on epilepsy epidemiology in Mvolo County, South Sudan, an onchocerciasis-endemic area with high epilepsy prevalence, was investigated. Annual CDTI was introduced in 2002 in Mvolo, with interruptions in 2016 and 2020.

Mental health issues associated with the management of tuberculosis in Homabay, Busia and Kakamega Counties, Kenya.
Despite the implementation of patient-centred care, mental health issues remain a significant risk factor and comorbidity for Tuberculosis (TB) disease. Mental health issues being co-morbidities to TB are likely to increase the disease burden of the affected population. This study, therefore, investigated the prevalence and impact of mental health issues in Tuberculosis (TB) patients.

Enablers and barriers to vaccine uptake and handwashing practices to prevent and control COVID-19 in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania: a systematic review
The global emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) posed unprecedented challenges, jeopardising decades of progress in healthcare systems, education, and poverty eradication. While proven interventions such as handwashing and mass vaccination offer effective means of curbing COVID-19 spread, their uptake needs to be higher, potentially undermining future pandemic control efforts. Our team conducted a systematic review synthesising available evidence of the factors influencing vaccine uptake and handwashing practices in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania in the contex

Long Term Socio-economic Effects of COVID-19 in Rural KENYA
When the novel coronavirus arrived in sub-Saharan Africa, many feared the continent would not be able to cope with the impact of such a fast-evolving pandemic. Memories of how the Ebola virus overwhelmed weak health systems in West Africa in 2014 loomed largely, and many braced themselves for the socio-economic fallout. But with COVID-19, this never fully materialized. In this research brief, we show that despite falls in income, in the long-term rural communities in western Kenya found a way to cope economically with COVID-19 and its containment measures.
Cases of the Corona Virus Disease of 2019 (COVID-19) in Kenya have continued to increase rapidly, since the first case in the country was confirmed in March 2020. In the wake of the pandemic, the health and socio-economic challenges experienced by the youth in Kenya are likely to be elevated. We assessed knowledge, practices, perceived risk of infection, adoption of recommended behaviour and the effects of COVID-19 among the youth in Kenya.
