Mental and sexual health outcomes associated with FGM/C in Africa: A systematic narrative synthesis

There is limited evidence on mental and sexual health outcomes and related interventions for women with Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in Africa. This narrative synthesis reviewed 25 studies published between 2010 and 2022, revealing that most focused on sexual health issues such as pain, reduced desire, and arousal difficulties, while only four addressed mental health outcomes like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and sleep disorders. No studies examined combined interventions for both mental and sexual health. The findings highlight the urgent need to strengthen health systems by training primary and specialist healthcare providers to deliver integrated care for women affected by FGM/C.
