Acting Country Director, Amref Health Africa in Ethiopia
Dr. Addis Tamire is theActing Country Director for Amref Health Africa in Ethiopia, while also serving as a Senior Director for Integrated Health System Strengthening Investments. In his current role, he provides strategic leadership for Amref’s Ethiopia programme, advancing partnerships, program quality, innovation, and sustainable impact in support of Ethiopia’s health and development priorities.
As a public health leader, Dr Addis brings 20 years of experience, advancing health sector reform, public service delivery, and organizational transformation across Africa. Prior to his appointment as Acting Country Director, Dr. Addis led Amref Ethiopia’s initiatives to strengthen subnational health systems, primary healthcare governance, financing, and service delivery through locally owned and sustainable approaches.
A Harvard-trained Deliverologist and transformation specialist, Dr. Addis has held several senior leadership positions, including Chief of Staff and Director General at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health, where he contributed to major health sector reforms and supported the country’s progress toward national and global health goals. He also served as Head of the Ethiopian Tax Transformation Office and as a Senior Advisor at McKinsey & Company, advising governments and institutions on health systems transformation, economic development, public sector performance, and resource mobilization.
Dr. Addis has supported leaders across Africa in applying evidence-based approaches to health system strengthening, implementation, and government delivery. He has also served as Expert Faculty for the Harvard Ministerial Leadership Program, mentoring senior government officials on leading and sustaining complex reforms, and currently is a Visiting Scientist at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Addis holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Gondar and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of South Africa
