Our Community Health Workforce Programme supports Ethiopia’s Health Extension Programme to build a skilled, digitally enabled and economically resilient community health workforce. By creating dignified employment opportunities for young people, particularly women, the programme also contributes to stronger, more equitable primary healthcare.

Led by Amref Health Africa in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, the programme is implemented in five African countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and Burkina Faso. In Ethiopia, consortium partners include Healthy Entrepreneurs and Africa Frontline First through Last Mile Health.

The programme follows a Ministry of Health-led approach. It begins with a detailed assessment of the local context, followed by a human-centred design process to understand the needs, experiences and aspirations of community health workers and other stakeholders. These insights inform a comprehensive implementation plan, which then guides the programme’s delivery phase.
