Sanitation Daily was a five year urban WASH project implemented from 2012 to 2017 in three slum sub-cities of Addis Ababa: Addis Ketema, Kirkos, and Lideta. With financial support from the European Commission, the project aimed to increase access to appropriate, affordable, safe, and sustainable basic sanitation service among vulnerable and needy slum communities.

 

Sanitation Daily project employed a strategy that helped improve sanitation service delivery through enhanced technical and management capacities of local WASH service providers, government authorities, and communities.

Key Achievements

  • 41 communal latrines constructed, of which nine of them have biogas generating system installed.
  • 3,500 community members benefited, including unemployed women groups who used the biogas integrated public sanitation facility for income generating activities.
  • 2,000-meter closed ditch system constructed, enabling a total of 1,200 community members to live in a clean environment.
  • 49 school sanitation facilities and one health centre latrine constructed, as a result over 50,000 school children have access to safe WASH facilities.
  • Seven public sanitation facilities constructed. This created WASH-related economic opportunities for 42 unemployed women and youth and enhanced environmental hygiene.
  • 45,417 community members reached with hygiene and sanitation messages and contributed to improved WASH knowledge and practices.
  • 868 WASH committee members trained, contributing to better management of WASH facilities.
  • 58 local authorities trained, contributing to better water and sanitation service delivery, governance and sustainability.
