With funding from Italian Agency for Development Co-operation, Gambella Emergency WASH project worked to improve the living conditions of South Sudanese refugees and hosting communities in Gambella region.  

 

Particularly targeting the most vulnerable groups, the project help reduce conflicts over local resources and improve long-term access to sustainable WASH in Itang special Woreda and the surrounding refugee camps. The project directly reached more than 25,000 people with various WASH interventions.

Key Achievements

  • More than 11,000 people have access to safe water supply from two shallow wells fitted with solar pump and rural pipe system expansions.
  • 3,217 students have access to school WASH facilities constructed in Pulkodi primary school.
  • Seven school WASH club established and trained in Pulkodi primary and secondary schools.
  • 21 WASHCo members and eight water care-takers trained on managing community water supply, operation and maintenance.
  • Sixty five health professionals and Health promoters trained on Community Led Total Sanitation and Hygiene (CLTSH), hygiene promotion awareness creation and community mobilization
  • 1,740 households have access to sanitation facility in their homes.
  • More than 5000 people reached with hand hygiene education and awareness during Global Handwashing Days in 2019 and 2020.
  • 600 adolescent girls from the most vulnerable families have access to washable and re-usable sanitary pads; and supported with appropriate menstrual hygiene management education in Eliya and Itang high schools.
