WASH Flagship is a three-year Menstrual Hygiene Management project that aims to contribute to enhanced health and well-being of girls and women by promoting gender equality, rights, and reducing barriers to girl’s education.
The project works to enhance access to sustainable WASH services, menstrual hygiene management (MHM) resources, school attendance of girls, and work participation and community engagement of women in several districts of Oromia region and Addis Ababa. Aligned with the government’s priorities, the project works to address the MHM challenges of school and out of school adolescent girls, menstruating women in the schools’ vicinities, and thereby improve girl’s education and women empowerment.
With financial support from MADEBLUE Company of the Netherlands, the project directly contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and 17, and leverages partnership as it is implemented jointly with Water and Sewerage Authority, Public Mobilization Office, Solid Waste Management Agency, Women’s and Children’s Affairs, Health Bureau, Microfinance institutions, TVET Agency, and Labour and Social Affairs Department. Targeted community members, mainly the youth, benefit from increased access to gender responsive WASH services and access to MHM products and services, enhanced knowledge and awareness about menstruation, the creation of enabling environment that supports appropriate WASH and MHM.
