Integrated WASH and Livelihood for Pastoralist Communities in Afar

Spain WASH was a four-year climate resilient WASH project that was implemented from 2015 to 2018. With funding from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, the project aimed to  improve the health of pastoralist communities and reducing their vulnerability to extreme poverty and food crises through provision of self-managed sustainable WASH service and support in livestock rearing and small farming practices in Mille, Chifra, Afambo, Asayta, Argoba, Dulesa  and Gewane woredas of Afar Regional State.

The project contributed to improving resilience of pastoralist communities and adaptive capacities of vulnerable communities through livelihoods protection and diversification initiatives as well as through strengthening district level partners’ capacities so community ownership and management of drinking water and livelihoods could be ensured.
