Afar Drought Emergency WASH

2015 – 2016

Our Drought Emergency WASH project was implemented in Awash Fentale, Amibara, Gewane and Bidu Woredas of Zone 2 and Zone 3 of Afar Regional State. Financially supported by USAID and sub-granted by IRC-Ethiopia, the project aimed at improving access to safe water supply for drought emergency affected communities; and hygiene and sanitation promotion coverage. The project particularly targeted women and Children.

Key Achievements

32,780 people have access to clean water through rehabilitation of non-functional water supply schemes, provision of point of use water treatment chemicals, and water trucking.
Nearly 20, 000 people reached with hygiene and sanitation education.
13,250 people directly benefitted from rehabilitated water scheme.
33,780 people benefitted from point-of-use water treatment chemicals.
28 WASH committee members trained.
6,756 households mobilized for hand washing and latrine construction.
50% improvement on proper water usage and storage among the target population.
