SMART - Sanitation Marketing, Agriculture, Rural Development and Transformation Project

SMART is a three-year Italian Agency for Development Cooperation funded project. Implemented in partnership with VIS-Volontariato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo, Salesians of Don Bosco, Hydroaid, Museke Foundation, Metropolitan City of Turin, and Polytechnic of Turin in six kebeles of Gambella Zuria woreda, the project works towards enhancing the living condition and resilience of refugees host communities and villages through community lead approach. By increasing access to safe and adequate water supply and access to sanitation facilities and sanitation marketing practices, SMART contributes to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 6 – ‘Clean Water and Sanitation for All’.

Key Achievements

  • Access to clean water increased by 20% in the target population.
  • 13,326 people [6530 females] have access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation services
  • 17 water points constructed, of which two are in schools and one at a health center.
  • Nine shallow wells constructed, of which five are fitted with solar-water pumps systems and four have hand pumps installed.
  • Six sanitation-marketing centers established and 7000 community members benefited from it.
  • 1450 households constructed new latrine of their own.
  • 1,606 school children have access to sex separated sanitation services in three schools.
  • 50 WASH committees (WASHCos) established, trained and equipped.
  • WASH related job opportunities created for more than 30 community members.
