‘Improving WASH in Slum Communities’ was a four-year project (2015 –2019) that aimed to improve water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and livelihoods in slum communities of Akaki-kality and Yeka Sub-cities of Addis Ababa.

With funding support from Comic Relief-UK, this project worked to address gaps in access to WASH services in the selected sub-cities. Implemented in collaboration with the Regional Health Bureau (RHB) and Addis Ababa City Government Cleansing Management Agency, the project more specifically worked to increase community access to and use of sustainable water supply and sanitation services, and to improve the hygiene practices and livelihood opportunities of underserved community members, school children, women, and unemployed youth living in the slums.

The project engaged in training and capacity building of more than 1,000 front line workers (e.g. waste collection operators, urban health extension workers, teachers, local authorities) and mass hygiene and sanitation mobilization and promotion activities for more than 80,000 people.
